Joe Hernandez Biography to be Released Advanced copies of Rudolph Alvarado’s biography The Untold Story of Joe Hernandez: The Voice of Santa Anita, is generating a number of positive reviews that have the book poised to be a best seller. The book has generated such a buzz that Santa Anita Park officials invited Alvarado to conduct a book signing at the track on April 5 and 6. Scheduled to be released on March 21, Alvarado has been researching Hernandez’s life since 2002. A website accompanying the book can be found at www.voiceofsantaanita.com. The book comes with the added bonus of an audio CD containing some of Joe’s most memorable calls. Regarding the book, Pete Pedersen, the 2001 winner of the Eclipse of Merit award and the Joe H. Palmer Award of Merit from the New York Turf Writer’s Association, wrote, “This biography stands as a remarkable work of research . . . . The romance of horseracing, the source of so much of its appeal, is given full marks . . . . But it’s the subject, Joe Hernandez, who emerges as a catalyst . . . . The book is a great read. For anyone who wants to know what horseracing was—and is—it’s a keeper! Joe Hernandez was larger than life. This rendition paints the portrait.” Alvarado became interested in the story behind Hernandez’s life after reading Laura Hillenbrand’s, Seabiscuit: An American Legend. “One of the most intriguing discoveries that I made,” Alvarado shared, “was that the story of Joe’s personal life as preserved in newspapers and articles was not true. It was a complete fabrication, even down to where Joe told people he was born.”
